On stage

The play is replete with compelling performances.

The play is replete with compelling performances.

Take time out to watch the much-feted Gautam Raja play, The Vaidya’s Oath. The well-produced play, replete with compelling performances, deals with issues which are often ignored i.e. healthcare in rural India. The playwright has brilliantly juxtaposed the needs and circumstances of a well-to-do doctor’s family with those of a girl from the village. The narrative talks about a husband and wife, a doctor and a scientist, a mother and a baby and antibiotics that no longer work. As one reviewer succinctly said, “The dichotomy of the access to healthcare in the two families is stark, and is indeed the reality today.”

Directed by Jeff Teare and presented by Jagriti Theatre, Bengaluru , the play has won the Wellcome Trust UK International Public Engagement Award. Jagriti Theatre, Bengaluru, in collaboration with Theatre Science UK and the National Centre for Biological Science (NCBS), works to bring about public awareness on bio-medical issues, through the arts.

Catch the play, The Vaidya’s Oath, June 29, 6.30pm, CD Deshmukh Auditorium, India International Centre. There will be an audience interaction after the performance.
